Leah is a member of the LDS Church, and has 6 kids. What she enjoys most is learning who she independent of both of those things

Where to even begin. This episode was recorded before I had officially decided to walk away from the LDS Church. Even at the time it was so refreshing and wonderful to talk with a more nuanced member and feminist. I know this isn’t everyone’s experience, but I was taught growing up that feminism wasn’t necessarily a good thing. It wasn’t until much later in life that I realized that feminism is a GOOD thing.

We need to empower women. It is honestly one of the reasons I decided to step away from the LDS Church. I felt and was taught that my worth was intrinsically linked to being a wife and mother. I was never encouraged to do what *I* wanted to do. I was never encouraged to pursue my dreams and career. Everything I learned all revolved around being a wife and mother. While I am those things, I am so much more than that. I am me. And that is perfect. Just me is enough. I have value. You have value, just as you are.

I know this was the intro in the episode, but I absolutely love what Leah said.

“I feel like I got so used to being invisible, or being someone else’s mom, that it really took a long time for me to come out of that. To be like, no, I’m my own human being. I’m my own person with or without my kids with me. WIth or without my husband with me. And I need people to start seeing ME.”

I felt that on such a deep level. You, as a person, are important. You deserve and need to be seen as you. Just as you are.

If you’re feeling lost and like your identity has faded away into your children or your spouse, it’s time to reclaim your power and your self. What do you like to do? What brings you joy? What sets fire to your soul? Take the time to figure those things out. You deserve it.
